In the Third Baku International Humanitarian Forum was held a “round table” on theme “multiculturalism and originality: in search of value consensus in society.”
Leaders of roundtable were : Associate of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan, rector Baku Slavic University Professor Kamal Abdulla, a special representative of the President of the Russian Federation for International Cultural Cooperation, Ambassador at Large at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation , Doctor of Arts Professor Mikhail Shvydkoi ; MEP Silvana Koch – Mehrin (Belgium) .
The meeting of roundtable “Multiculturalism and originality: in search of value consensus in society” opened a member of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan, Rector of Baku Slavic University Professor Kamal Abdullah. He stressed the importance of ongoing forum and wished successful work to all participants. The guests of honor at the opening ceremony were former Serbian President Boris Tadic, former President of Latvia Valdis Zatlers, former President of Romania Emil Constantinescu, who stressed in their speech the actuality of the problem, the role of multiculturalism in security and peaceful coexistence of different cultures and religions in a single society, interreligious dialogue and the European cultural heritage, cooperation between different religious faiths etc.
General Director of ISESCO Abdul-Aziz Othman Al Twaijri, made a speech which touched on political correctness and pluralism in modern society.
Special Representative of the Russian President of the Russian Federation for International Cultural Cooperation, Ambassador at Large at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Doctor of Arts , Professor Mikhail Shvydkoi also welcomed all the participants of the Forum, wished success to the work of the round table. He stressed the importance of practical recommendations-considered during the forum for the construction of a multicultural society in the context of large-scale migration of people at the present stage. Then the meeting of the section “Multiculturalism and problems of integration in Society” opened. Moderators of this meeting were Director of the Institute of Philosophy, Sociology and Law of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Mammadzade professor of the Department of Psychology at the California State University, Kevin McDonald, Secretary General of the Commission of the Russian Federation for UNESCO Grigory Ordzhonikidze.
Reports of the former General Prosecutor of Italy Vitaliano Esposito on «Criminal law and the challenge of multiculturalism» and of the chairman of the State Committee for Work with Religious Organizations Elshad Iskandarov on “Religious tolerance as social capital-a unique model of public consent in Azerbaijan” were considered”. The following reports were also presented: Letizia Francesca Reus-princess of Austria on “How can global art unframe the mind today”, MP of the Azerbaijan Republic, member of the Azernaijani delegation to PACE, chairperson of Sub-committee on Racism and Xenophobia, Vice-Rector for International Relations in BSU , Professor S. Gafarova “Azerbaijan area of multiculturalism and tolerance”, head of Department of the Baku State University, Professor Kamila Aliyeva on ” Multiculturalism as a unifying factor of national self –consciousness”, professor at the University of Siena, Judge in the Tribunal of Siena (Italy) , Francesco Bagnaion “Immigration and Multiculturalism : utopia , threat or opportunity”, Honorary President Emeritus of the Parliament of Malta- Michael Frendo, on “Multiculturalism and Citizenship setting out common values”, Scientific Secretary of the Institute of World History of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, the associate professor V. Soloshenko on “Challenges to the politics of integration and multiculturalism in the European countries”, Director of the Institute of Philosophy, Sociology and Law of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan, professor Ilham Mammadzade “Multiculturalism and integration in society”, Marina. F. Bykova- the professor of the faculty department of Philosophy and Religious studies at the University of North Caroline (USA) “ Morality in Politics : Kant s approach to politics and his call for the unity between morality and politics”, Professor Andrei Kudreyachenko – the director of the Institute of the World History of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine – “Islam in Modern Europe and Ukraine: challenge, state and perspectives”, Journalist, expert of the Bulgarian Red Cross – Olga Al Ahmed “multiculturalism and problems of integration in the society”. The reporters stressed such important moments of globalizing societies as of cultural originality and individuality, rising of the tolerance level, cooperation in interconfessional dialogue construction of the social government, problems of migration and interethnic conflicts in the modern world. Later coffee break was announced.
After the break “round table” continued the section with the subject “Originality and culturo-national identity. Section was headed by the first deputy minister of Culture of Ukraine – Timophey Kokhan, director of the seminar in Oriental studies of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, professor of Turcology- Hendrik Boeschoten, head of the chair of Azerbaijan Literature and one of the founders of ISCH (Inter-national Society for Cultural History) – Rahila Heybullayeva.
There were discussed reports of the Deputy director for academic affairs, Institute of Philosophy and law of Siberian branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences professor Yuri Popkov on “Ethno-cultural neotraditionalism as a way of saving diversity and originality in globalization” and the president of the fund «Boundless World» Andrei Kisleyev «Intercultural interrelation as a means of information transmission for progress and peace»- President of Rome’s Institute of International Affairs Ferdinando Nelly Ferochi on «Multiculturalism and national identity»:“problems of descendants of refugees”, Saint John Department of Social Sciences at the University of New Brunswick – the professor Ricardo Duchesne on «Questioning the Canadian model of multiculturalism» , head of the department of Azerbaijan literature in BSU , Professor S. Gafarova s report on «Folklore and politics, or elements of national identification in the political sphere. Signs of verbal equinox», Professor of the Yarmouk University (Jordan) Hany Hayajney “Dynamic of Interaction between Intangible Cultural Heritage and Cultural Diversity”, MP of Azerbaijan Republic, head of the department of English Philology the Baku Slavic University, associate professor Sevinj Fataliyeva on «Critical analysis of integrated models in Multiculturalism», Head of the Ethno sociological division, Institute of Humanitarian research and Indigenous People of the Siberian branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences-Vanda İgnateva – «Northern Turks- sakha ethnicity and cultural representation to the epoch of globalization», the president of Italian Helsinki Committee for Human Rights Antonio Stango «Universal values and regional approaches in a fast-changing world» and others.
After lunch break meeting of section was held on intercultural dialogue (interculturalism) as an Area of Value consensus –under moderation of the member of Executive Board of Turkish national commission for UNESCO – Harun Tepe, the head of the Department of European studies of the Institute of Social and Political Sciences-Ural Federal University named after the first President of Russia B. N. Yeltsin, professor Aleksander Nesterov, MP of Azerbaijan Republic member of Azerbaijani delegation to PACE Chairperson of sub-Committee on Racism and Xenophobia, vice-rector Baku Slavic University on International Relations professor Sahiba Gafarova.
There were also discussed reports of Secretary of State, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Romania – Stejarel Olaru on “İntercultural dialogue (interculturalism) as an Area of Value consensus”, director of the Museum of the first president of the Republic Kazakhstan Alma Sagyngali on “Tolerance of Kazakh society – in the context of providing value consensus”, the head of the Department of Literature of Moscow State Linguistics University, professor AleksandrBondarev on “Polycentrism-dialogic form of polyculturism”, the head of the chair of European Studies in Baku Slavic University, associate-professor Sevda Akhundova on “Tolerance as moral imperative of a multicultural society (philosophical aspect)”, professor of the Sapienza university of Rome- Maqda Pedache on “Intercultural heritage: dynamic approach”, integration manager, head of the department on International relations NESS technologies company member of Executive Board of the International Association “Israel-Azerbaijan” (AZIZ), Arye Gut on “Multiculturalism and Tolerance in Azerbaijan: view from Israel”, department of History and International Relations of the University of Perugia-associate professor Lorenzo Medicion “Multiculturalism, Human Rights and International Relations”, Head of the Department for admission of foreign students of the Silezi University, Johanna Laskowska on “Internationalisation of Universities as the process of supporting mutual understanding”, the head of the Department of European studies of the Institute of Social and Political Sciences-Ural Federal University named after the first President of Russia B. N. Yeltsin, professor Aleksander Nesterov on “Multiculturalism and Tolerance in Russian Universities” etc.
At the meeting of this section firstly, different aspects of polyculturalism and polycentrism were touched upon, there was also stressed the importance of increasing investments in Education as well as positive experience of Azerbaijanian Society in construction of peace and tolerance, care and cautious regard to cultural heritage of different nations in Azerbaijan
Finally, the rector of Baku Slavic University, the Corresponding member of the Azerbaijan National Academy of sciences, professor Kamal Abdulla reported and thanked all members of the forum and offered to begin discussions, also to accept Declaration, which would be the pledge of future meetings.
A special representative of the President of the Russian Federation for Inter-national Cultural Cooperation, Ambassador at Large at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Doctor of Arts Professor Mikhail Shvydkoi also made a closing speech. Gratitude by the names of the participants of round table was expressed to the president of the Azerbaijan Republic to Mr. Ilham Aliyev for organizing the forum on the highest level and for conditions supporting its realization.
After the discussion the resolution was unanimously, accepted at the end of the Forum.
